Bronson, James H.  First Sergeant, Company D, 5th U. S. Colored Infantry Regiment. Medal of Honor for service at Chaffin’s Farm.  Born in Burrell Township, Pa. in 1838.  Another source lists birth in Indiana County, Pa. in 1837. Enlisted on July 4, 1863.  Mustered out Oct. 4, 1865 at Columbus, Ohio.  James had worked as a barber prior to enlisting.  In November, 1864, he requested a reduction in rank from 1st Sergeant to allow him to remain a part of the regimental brass band.  His request was honored, and he was discharged as a “Musician” at Carolina City, NC. , on Sept. 20, 1865. Member of the Colonel Robert G. Shaw GAR post #206, joining in July 1883.  Working as a barber at that time, in Mansfield Valley. Service injuries-“wounded left calf”  on Sept. 29, 1864. (Chaffin’s Farm)  He died on March 16, 1884 and is buried in Chartiers Cemetery in Carnegie, Pa. with a MOH headstone.  He participated in the battles at City Point, Fort Converse, and the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm. Medal of Honor citation reads:  Took command of his company, all the officers having been killed or wounded, and gallantly led it.
