James, Miles. Corporal, Company C, 36th U. S. Colored Infantry Regiment. Born in 1829, Princess Anne County, Va. He enlisted in the 36th at Portsmouth, Va. Occupation was listed as farmer. He fought in the battle of New Market Heights, where he won the Medal of Honor. He was seriously wounded in the left arm, necessitating immediate amputation, yet loaded and discharged his rifle with one arm, urging his men forward, within 30 yards of the rebel works. He sent a letter to General A. G. Draper, requesting that he not be sent home. Draper’s reply recommended that his request be granted. He was made a Sergeant, and awarded a silver medal for gallantry by General Butler. He was mustered out on October 13, 1865, for disability and died on August 28, 1871. He is buried in Norfolk County, Virginia, gravesite unknown.
