Civil War Sesquicentennial

By Joe Certaine
Past President of the United States Colored Troops Living History Association

Friends; April 12, 2011 will begin the 150th anniversary observation of the American Civil War. On the website
www.descendantsjubileeproject.com we are encouraging any descendants of a USCT soldier and any supporters of the USCT to contact their Congressional Representatives especially if they are represented by a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, and ask them to support a federal project that will acknowledge, recognize and honor the significant role played by the United States Colored Troops of the Union Army.

The states won't recognize that role and it is up to us to be sure that this is a major part of the planning for the Sesquicentennial Observance. Please let us know about any preparations that are occurring in your state and whether or not the USCT is being recognized. Within the next month we intend to contact the Congressional Black Caucus to ascertain which Members of Congress are willing to sponsor draft legislation honoring the USCT role in the Civil War by establishing and funding a limited calendar of events highlighting the Bureau of Colored Troops and the Officers and men who served.

Please forward any event that your unit is planning. We are only interested in field events, no conferences or symposia. We want to be able to recommend these events for observance in the field by Congressional Representatives and their staffs, as well as the public at large.  Go to www.descendantsjubileeproject.com and click on USCT for more information.

Thanks,

Joe Certaine
